Unless you are a skilled baker you will know what most of these terms are but for the rest of us we have listed some of the popular terms used in the “bakers language".
When talking about frostings and fillings for your wedding cake remember these terms:
Buttercream
Sweet creamy mixture of butter, sugar and eggs used for both icing and filling, added fruit or flavoring give this filling that extra flair. Better used for indoor or night time weddings and receptions as the butter will melt if left out in the sun.
Marzipan
Paste made of egg whites, sugar and ground almonds, best for molding into creative shapes and can easily be dyed to suite any color theme. Can be used as either a filling or frosting but more commonly used as a frosting.
Ganache
Rich melted chocolate blended with a heavy cream which is suitable for both frosting and a filling, although because of all the delicious chocolate it is best placed somewhere cool like indoors or out in the evening air.
Royal Icing
A wonderful frosting to use when creating lace and latticework as it is a thick mixture of sugar and egg whites, also perfect for those outdoor weddings.
Fondant
A sweet sugary dough best used for creating miniature flowers and decadent decorations as it looks like porcelain when it dries, making it perfect for all kinds of weather.
Chocopan
Very much the same as fondant but can be made into dark or white chocolate flavors also making it a good frosting to use when having an outdoor wedding as it is not quite chocolate it wont melt.
Wedding Cake Shapes
Once you have decided what tasty kind of frosting and filling you will be having, choosing the shape of your cake should be just as simple with these few shapes:
Square
A typical four sided cake. For a more modern look you could have two or three tiers set at different angles. This shape could be used for any type of wedding.
|
Scalloped
The sides of each layer have scalloped edges like a flower petal. Could be used for an outdoor or garden themed wedding.
Hexagonal
With this striking six sided cake, add on the layers and you wont need to decorate with intricate details. Suitable for most weddings as it is very hip.
Moulded
For those who are having a really specific theme, you could have a cake shaped as a castle, football or waterfall, but is probably best used for the grooms cake.
Round
The absolute traditional, can be used for any type of wedding and can have as many layers as you wish.
Now for everything else:
Tiers
Each layer of the cake is referred to as a tier.
Pillars
Columns of plastic, wood or metal which hold each tier up
Topper
A decoration of your choice which goes right on top of the cake
Grooms Cake
Not a must but definitely a sweet gesture for your new husband, the grooms cake is often themed to a favorite sport or hobby of his which is usually sliced and served right after the wedding cake.
