There are two types of brides: “hair brides” & “veil brides”. Hair brides are those who prefer the focus to be on their hair. They usually just tack a veil under their upstyle which can easily be removed at the reception in order to really get down and have a good time!
Veil brides on the other hand, prefer to keep their veils on at all times throughout the wedding and reception. They usually prefer the longer, multiple layered veils. Hair for these brides is just a form to “pouf” up their veils.
No matter which type of bride you choose to be, you’ll want to choose a veil or a hairstyle which best suites your face! Be honest with yourself and follow these tips to find out exactly which category you fall in to.
These basic face shapes – Round, Oblong, Oval & Heart – are soft and curved while these shapes – Square, Triangle, Diamond & Rectangle – have more angles and corners. To determine your shape of your face tie your hair away from your face and check for the following:
- Round -
Using your nose as a centrepiece, the edges should be of equal distance apart i.e. it is as wide as it is long.
- Oblong -
This shape is oval-like but is slightly more elongated. Often mistaken for oval, but when placed next to a true oval you can distinctly see the difference.
- Oval -
Study the edges of your face, it should be slightly longer than it is wide, with soft, curved edges.
- Heart -
You should notice that around your eye, temple and cheek area it is wider narrowing toward your chin with soft curved edges.
- Square -
Your face is the same distance from the top to your chin and from side to side, it should be level at the forehead and down the sides with a strong, square jaw line which may stick out just a bit.
- Triangle -
This shape is similar to the heart shape but with sharper, more angular lines.
- Diamond -
Your face should be widest at the cheekbones narrowing at the chin and the forehead with sharper features.
- Rectangle -
This shape is similar to the square but is obviously longer than it is wide.
Now that you have determined exactly what shape your face is, use the following tips to help choose the perfect veil or hairstyle that will best suite you keeping in mind the simple rule that “opposites attract”.

Which Wedding Viel Suits Which Face Shape?
With a round shaped face you will want to use a veil or hairstyle to give the illusion that it is narrower, so try using a veil that will hang down alongside your face or having a down hairstyle that will frame the face, such as a shoulder length bob.
On the other hand a strong, square jaw line needs to be softened. Using soft curls alongside your face will help as well as a longer veil other than a short wide one. Although many people consider a strong jaw line to be a striking feature, the bride will be able to show it off with confidence.
For those with the more oblong shaped faces you will need to compliment it with a bit of width. Stay away from high up styles as they will only make your face look longer. Also try using veils which have a “waterfall” effect and use it with a tiara or bun wrap.
Now if you have a triangular or heart shaped face you want to add a bit of width to your jaw line. Instead of using a full veil try using one that you can pin up at the back where it will show up your neckline. Try incorporating it with a flipped-up bob or a chignon (a roll or knot made in the nape of the neck).
And finally, if you have an oval or diamond shaped face you are truly blessed as you have a perfectly symmetrical shaped face and your choices are unlimited, as long as they complement your neckline, gown and accessories.
