So you have decided that you want to write your own wedding vows – and you have probably hit writers block. You have so many things you want to say, but where do you start?
Don’t worry, you are not the only one who has been in this position, so here are some tips to help you get the perfect words onto paper.
Get The OK
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that your wedding officiant will accept personalized vows. Some religions, such as Catholic and Episcopal may require you to recite all or part of the traditional vows. Also, almost all officiants will want to review your words in advance.
Plan Together
It’s a good idea that you and your fiancé are both going to write your own vows – and will you write vows together as one, or each their own. Are you going to share what you have written with them before the ceremony?
Create your outline
Start off with an outline of what you want to write, that way you will have the structure that you can work on and wont get carried away or off track when you are writing.

Mushy, Touching or Funny?
What is the style of your vows going to be? Are you going to take a humorous approach or are you going to go for the more sincere and speak from your heart?
Cut it down
Once you have your words down on paper you can start to trim it down so that it is not too long. Remember, this isn’t a speech – that comes later.
Read It Through
Once you have your words down, read them out – and even better, record what you have put down in paper and then play it back so you can hear what you have. Make your final adjustments and then you are ready to go!
