It's hard to beat the beauty of a beach wedding. Here are tips to keep your head above water as you plan your beachside wedding.
Beach weddings can be great fun, but you need to do some prep work before you can walk onto the beach and get hitched. Here are some questions you definitely need to ask:
- How many guests are allowed?
- Can food be served?
- Can a tent be pitched?
- Is smoking or alcohol permitted?
- What about wheelchair access?
- Are there restrooms for guests?
- Are electrical outlets available?
- What are the rules for lighting fires: bonfires, candles, torches, citronella, etc.?
- Who cleans up the area?
- What time does the sun set?
- What time does the beach close?
The Invitations
For your beachside wedding invitations you should avoid the using a formal wording format. Rather go with a more relaxed and casual wording to tie in with the beach setting.
Go with blues and white, or beach sand colors with blue for your invitations – again this will work in your beach wedding theme.
Decorating Ideas
Here are some of our favorite beach-theme decorating ideas:
- Seashell walkway
- Use colorful fish lights or paper lanterns above the reception tables
- Use soft pastel colors for decorations rather than brighter colors
- Place sand in a vase and place the candles to help light the area if you are going to be partying on the beach
- Have conch shells with flowers for your table centrepieces
Beach Wedding Photos
If you are having a beach wedding then your photographs will be more than run of the mill – you have so many options available to you to have great wedding photos. Sunset backdrops, the waves crashing in the distance, sand between your toes, the options are endless.

Don’t understate the fact that most beach weddings are more relaxed, so don’t be afraid to try a few different things – kick of your shoes, throw a Frisbee or build a sand castle together.
The Downside of beach weddings
Unfortunately the seaside usually has to deal with the brunt of the weather and bugs – and these can really be a major obstacle to overcome. Here are some tips for dealing with the elements and locals:
- Because beaches tend to be quite breezy, keep decorations simple. Make sure flowers are secure – sand filled buckets are usually popular. Another alternative is to replace the flowers with shells, torches, candles in glass vases.
- Everyone wants perfect weather for their special day, but its best to plan for a breezy and/or rainy day. If you can rent a tent – preferable an open sided one, then make sure you do.
- The beach and bugs go hand in hand – and citronella candles or torches will help keep the mosquitoes and other bugs away. Also have a decorative basket with mini insect repellents for you guests handy.
- If you want to keep curious onlookers at bay, then opt for a early morning or sunset wedding.
- Even if you have your wedding in the middle of summer – remember that the temperature is always a little cooler on the coast – especially at dawn and dusk. Remind your guests to bring something warm to wear.
- Most public beaches have public patrols to remove rubbish from the beach. Call the local council to find out what times these patrols take place – you don’t want the local patrol to be interrupting your wedding. It would also be perfect if your wedding could take place after a cleanup.
