Wedding Customs Explained

Ever wondered just exactly what all those traditional wedding customs mean, and just why there is so much superstition around weddings?

The Wedding Ring

The reason that wedding rings are circular is simply because circles represent eternity, which means that their is no end or beginning. This is simply to represent your love for each other. Contrary to some beliefs, it has nothing to do with suffering.

Groomsmen

You may be surprised to discover where groomsmen came from, but way back when a marriage used to take place where the groom used to have to capture his bride, this usually resulted in the groom having to fend off her family. Because of this he would need some help, and that's home the groomsmen came to be.

Which Side of the Altar?

It is traditional that when the bride and groom stand together at the Altar that the groom stands on the right side of the bride. This is because, many many years ago, the groom would have held his bride with his left hand, and his sword with his right.

Over the Threshold

In Roman time it would have been considered bad luck if the bride stumbled when she entered her new home for the first time, and so as a result the tradition is that the groom carries the bride over the threshold.

Decorating the Getaway Car

It was considered that having a noisy car for leaving the reception would frighten any evil spirits away, and so as a result the cars were decorated, and the tradition of having cans tied to the back of the care to fend off evil spirits was started.

The Honeymoon

This one goes back again to the days of having to capture your bride. After the man had captured his bride, he would then take his bride away and only return once everyone was ready to acknowledge their union, presumably.
